Mongolia is a country rich in natural resources. Its estimated mineral wealth is $1–3 trillion, with coal, copper and gold making up the primary reserves (Fisher et al. 2011). According to data from the Mongolian National Statistical Office (NSO), real GDP grew at an average rate of 9 per cent annually over the past decade, peaking at 17.5 per cent in 2011 and bottoming out at −1 per cent in 2016.
